Inadequate vaginal lubrication can occur at any age, but it is especially common to women during and after menopause. Any number of circumstances or combination of circumstances can cause vaginal dryness before menopause such as stress, a side effect of contraceptives, smoking, condoms, various medications and certain medical treatments. Lack of adequate stimulation and heredity can also play a part.. Symptoms of vaginal dryness may include itching and/or stinging, pain or light bleeding with sex and urinary frequency or urgency. Vaginal dryness can make sex less pleasurable or in some cases uncomfortable.
